Update: Square Enix confirmed that Hitman is returning. The title will have a PlayStation-exclusive beta, and six assassination missions only available on that platform.
Sony mentioned a digital-first release, but it wasn't clear if that was a lead-up experience or if the game itself will be issued first on network services.
Square Enix also shared that the game will "begin" on December 8. The plan is to expand Hitman over time, with the first storyline concluding in 2016.
“This is new ground for Hitman, coming out digital first enables us to do something new, bold and exciting,” said Hannes Seifert, Studio Head at Io-Interactive. “We are building a live, expanding and evolving world of assassination where we continuously develop the game, listening closely to the players as we release new locations, missions and hits as soon as they are ready - where $60 and not a dollar more gets you full access to the experience.”
The game's E3 announcement trailer is below.
Sony's own online storefront seems to have spilled the beans on another E3 secret. The UK storefront carries a listing for one of Square Enix's unannounced games.
The store says that a current-gen Hitman title is on the way this year. The release date is stated to be December 8 of this year.
We've reached out to Square Enix for comment and will update should we receive a response.
