StudioMDHR's hand-drawn love letter to classic cartoons looks great, and plays well, too. Unfortunately, you're going to have to take our word on that for the time being.
The studio posted an explanation on its site:
"We know we said that Cuphead would be out in 2015 and now we’re saying that Cuphead will be out in 2016. We’re sorry. But this Cuphead isn’t that Cuphead. This Cuphead is so much better. With Microsoft helping us out, we are able to push the art further, refine the mechanics more, and deliver the Cuphead game we’ve always dreamed of. In development, time is our greatest asset, and pushing the release to 2016 allows us to make for the best game possible."
We spoke with studio co-founder Jared Moldenhauer at a Microsoft event, and he says it's been getting difficult to not give away too much about the game. Since Cuphead's coming out later now, he says he wants to make sure people are still surprised when they actually get to buy Cuphead and play it for themselves. As to when that might be, 2016 is as far as we know. Moldenhauer did tell a fan that if they're dying to play the game, they shouldn't expect it to arrive first thing on January 1, 2016.
It's a drag that we won't be able to play the game within the next few months, but perhaps this will help: For a look at some of StudioMDHR's earliest attempts at designing a character for their game, check out our sketchbook feature.
