Saturday night I went out to the theater around 8 PM to pick up two tickets to see a movie I've been excited about for quite some time. Standing in a line for around seven minutes and hearing nearly every person, couple and group in both lines ordering tickets to see Dumb and Dumber To made me smile as I realized many people shared my enthusiasm to see this sequel twenty years in the making. I picked up two tickets for Sunday night at 7:45 and headed home.
Fast forward to movie time. Sam and I arrived early in hopes of getting our favorite seats at the very top of the theater allowing us to see over everyone in the place. I was quite surprised to find that on opening weekend at a decent evening hour, her and I were the only two to enter the theater. This dampened my hopes for the movie a bit after seeing so many rushing to see it the night prior. Here's a horrible cell phone photo from the front of the place. Sam's up at the top but the blinding light of the projector makes impossible to see her or much of anything for that matter.
About four or five other couples showed up to see the film just before it started. We were all spread out around the theater in our own little bubbles of comfort as the opening sequence started.
As the movie progressed, my worries were quietly put to rest. Twenty years later, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are still the hilariously idiotic guys on screen they were back in the nineties.
The sense of humor is mostly the same but has evolved to adapt to today's humor. In other words, expect plenty of dick jokes. The story follows very closely with the original with a lot of the same plot lines such as assassin's trying to kill Harry and Lloyd. One thing that became very clear, is that you will enjoy this movie much more if you've seen and were a fan of the first.
While Sam has seen bits and pieces she didn't get the multiple recurring gags such as the breath spray, the "I like it a lot", the assassination of wheelchair bound blind boy Billy's birds, or the 'Hog' sequence which receives it's tribute through a Zamboni that Harry and Lloyd hilariously outrun a tornado in. These touches bring back a massive wave of nostalgia and make the film much more enjoyable, and possible put you on that blast from the past level of "everything's gonna' be alright".
Admittedly, a lot of the jokes cause you to smile rather than break out in heavy laughter. But I promise there are some in there. My favorite part of the entire film involves Lippencott (one of the assassins) moving into a bathroom to kill Harry with a gun. When he spots his shoes on the floor of a stall he unloads three roads through the door before kicking it open to find no one there. He hears a 'splash' in the next stall over and kicks open the door to see Harry with his feet submerged in the toilet, hiding in fear.
Lippencott: "Why are you standing in the toilet?"
Harry: "So you wouldn't see my feet."
Lippencott: *confused* "Why not just stand on the rim?"
Harry: "There's ball hairs all on this thing!"
Overall, the film is a good time. If you enjoyed the first entry, you'll enjoy the second. Maybe less, maybe more. Either way, I promise you will smile, you will laugh and you will walk away satisfied.
As the credit's roll, if you're a little sensitive like myself you're sure to get some emotions flowing as they show images from the previous entry beside this new creation. You'll find yourself thinking back to where you were in your life when the first film hit two decades ago. I grew up with the original Dumb and Dumber and remember watching it on a giant floor TV on a massive Xbox One sized VCR that I had to slap to get the video to correct since the tracking was broken. Good times, gooood times.
So, go ahead and see the film in theaters or wait until you can rent it or perhaps stream it via Netflix. But do yourself a favor, and don't miss this comedy if you enjoyed the first.
(NOTE: Stick around after the credits for a post credits scene involving Sea Bass)
