That is my basic premise. Here are couple of things Eris has said so far:
"Be wary of those who would use you as their blade. Beware of me."
"So mournful, such sorrow. But to them, pain is joy."
Also, during one of her missions you learn that they torture The Forsaken and other Hive to summon higher Hive creatures. I believe her intention was to send you to make sure that Crota was summoned, but in a weakened state so he wouldn't just completley destroy anyone who went after him. You destroy part of Crota's soul, and then you defeat him. Causing him pain and suffering, hence summoning a higher God, perhaps Oryx himself.
Another interesting thing she says after you defeat Crota:
> "Oryx will know of the fall of Crota, and he will come for revenge. I cannot wait."

"His Father won't forgive us for this... Oryx will come... I can't wait!"
